PETA Offers to Replace Stolen Road Sign—and Direct City Toward Compassion
Brighton, Vermont, got a little less bright after the city’s new electronic street sign was stolen. The $3,200 sign was intended to inform drivers of their speed in order to help prevent traffic accidents in a dangerous area—but it was barely in place when it was stolen. Brighton is offering a reward for the sign’s return, but PETA has a better idea. We’ll happily pay to replace the sign if we can put a message for motorists on the display: “Put the brakes on climate change. Go vegan. PETA.”
Posting our pro-vegan message on the sign could significantly reduce Brighton’s environmental impact. Since a staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture—according to the Worldwatch Institute—going vegan is the fastest way for people to make a significant reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions.
Our message will also be truly lifesaving for Vermont residents. Vegans are, on average, 18 percent thinner than meat-eaters and, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, they’re less prone to developing obesity, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Of course, every driver who decides to go vegan will also be saving the lives of more than 100 animals every year.
Hopefully, Brighton accepts PETA’s offer and lets us brighten up its roadways and enlighten its residents.
