The charts are packed with hot musicians whose compassion for animals and concern for their health or the environment prompted them to go vegetarian or vegan—but who are the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2014? That’s what peta2—PETA’s youth division, whose motto includes the words “Animals are not ours to eat”—hopes to determine with this year’s edition of its annual contest, now live at peta2.com. The nominees are more varied than ever, with alt music’s finest vying for the title alongside hip-hop artists, Disney stars, Oscar winners, pro athletes, and others. The winners—one male and one female—will be announced on August 25.
This year’s nominees include Grimes, Blink-182’s Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus,Fall Out Boy’s Andy Hurley, Christofer Drew, Davey Havok, Sia,and members of the bands Rise Against, Anti-Flag, and Atlas Genius. Many of these meat-free musicians went vegetarian or vegan out of concern for animals, such as all four members of Rise Against, who are proud to share how the “four of us alone save 400 animals every single year, just by choosing not to eat them.” Others, such as Drew, have a “greener” reason. “Factory farming is terrible for the environment,” he says, “not to mention that it’s gross.”
The full list of nominees—which also includes Jared Leto and Ellen Page (whom PETA named the sexiest vegan celebrities for 2014) as well as Jason Mraz, Angela Simmons, Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and others—is available here. Voting to help peta2 pick who it should name as the winners ends on August 22. Winners will be chosen by peta2 based on several factors, including vote count, and announced on August 25.
