Today’s music charts are packed with hot young stars whose compassion for animals and concern for their health or the environment prompted them to go vegetarian or vegan—but who are the Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities of 2014? That’s what peta2—PETA’s youth division, whose motto says, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—hopes to determine with this year’s edition of its annual contest, now live at peta2.com. The nominees are more varied than ever, and Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz and former Bring Me the Horizon and current I Killed the Prom Queen guitarist Jona Weinhofen are in the running for the honors, along with Disney stars, punk icons, Oscar winners, professional athletes, and others. The winners—one male and one female—will be announced on August 25.
“When I was about 13,” White-Gluz told peta2.de, the youth division of PETA’s German affiliate, “I decided to research the dairy and egg industry …. I really made a conscious decision that I was going to absolutely minimize any amount of suffering that I would induce on any other living being.” That’s when she decided to go vegan. “[T]he environmental benefits, health benefits, are, you know, like a happy bonus,” she says. Similarly, Weinhofen recalls, “I’ve been vegan 13 years. … [v]eganism and helping animals is one of the closest things to my heart.”
The full list of nominees—which also includes Jared Leto and Ellen Page (whom PETA named the sexiest vegan celebrities for 2014) as well as tattoo artist Megan Massacre, mixed martial arts fighter Akira Corassani, andmusicians Travis Barker, Davey Havok, and Dennis Lyxzén—is available here. Voting to help peta2 pick who it should name as the winners ends on August 22. peta2 will ultimately select winners based on several factors, including vote count.
