Hot off a string of international performances, Mogwai frontman Stuart Braithwaite stars in an exclusive new video for peta2, PETA’s youth division, in which he reveals what made him stop eating meat, how he finds vegetarian food on tour, and more.

In the new video, available here, which was shot on Mogwai’s tour bus, Braithwaite explains, “I remember a specific conversation with my mum, and she told me that pigs cry when they know they are going to die. … I just couldn’t really contemplate being part of that process. … A really easy thing to help animals is to go vegetarian because you’re just generally not being part of that process where they have to die for food.”

Everyone who goes vegetarian spares more than 100 animals every year from immense suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats, and Braithwaite knows he’s also helping his health. “Even before I went vegetarian, being told about how bad for you processed meat and all that stuff is … from a health point of view, it’s not good for you,” he says.

Numerous studies have confirmed that vegans are less prone to developing heart disease, cancer, obesity, and diabetes than meat-eaters are—and with the growing number of people ditching animal products, vegan food is easier to find than ever, all around the world. “I think that being vegetarian on tour is 95 percent of the time really easy,” Braithwaite says. “And I think it’s getting easier as the years … go by. … I actually think America is probably one of the easiest places to find vegetarian food.”

Braithwaite is part of a long list of musicians, artists, and other celebrities—including Atlas Genius, Morrissey, Dennis Lyxzén, Hellogoodbye, and Joan Jett—who have teamed up with peta2, PETA, or its overseas affiliates to promote healthy, humane meat-free meals.
