Brett Gurewitz Talks About the ‘Next Great Rights Movement’ in New peta2 Video

A punk-rock attitude prompted Brett Gurewitz to start Bad Religion, Epitaph Records, and transgressive comic book label Black Mask Studios—the label behind Liberator, the comic that follows the story of two hardcore animal rights activists—and in a new video interview with peta2, PETA’s youth division, “Mr. Brett” talks about why he thinks animal rights will be the next big revolution to hit the public consciousness. The new video just went up on peta2.com, where visitors can also find free vegan recipes, enter to win concert tickets, and more.

“I really feel that animal rights [is] the next great rights movement,” Gurewitz says. “It’s early days, and a lot of people don’t really understand how profound the change is going to be. But that was also the case with women’s rights and civil rights. One of these days, you’re gonna hear a president of the United States speak in favor of animal rights.”

Gurewitz goes on to point out that people who care about animals don’t have to follow the paths of the protagonists of Liberator. “Obviously, extreme activism isn’t for everybody,” he says. “You can get into some very good conversations, and you can open a lot of people’s minds that way. … And I think little things, like the Liberator comic popping up and the good work of PETA and musicians being outspoken—I think it’s infectious.”

Gurewitz is part of a long list of musicians, artists, and other celebrities—including Davey Havok, Rise Against, Serj Tankian, Mike Ness, Dave Navarro, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Andy Hurley—who have teamed up with peta2 to promote animal protection.
