Good Samaritan Pays a Price: Her Car Was Stolen During Act of Kindness

Eighteen-year-old student and delivery driver Kiara Billings was driving in Omaha when she spotted a dog running in the street. Other cars drove past, nearly hitting the animal. She pulled over to take the dog to safety, leaving her car unlocked and running. She retrieved the 14-year-old deaf and nearly blind dog, but when she returned to where she had parked, her car, which held her phone and tablet, was gone. Although the theft of Billings’ property is making school and work more difficult, she said it was all worth it because otherwise the dog might have been killed.

For her extraordinary efforts, Billings will receive a Compassionate Action Award and $250 from PETA to help her replace her property.

“Thanks to Kiara Billings’ heroic actions, this elderly dog has gotten a new lease on life,” says PETA Senior Vice President of Cruelty Investigations Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA hopes Billings’ kindness will inspire others to stop and help animals in need.”

In addition to the $250 from PETA, Billings will receive a framed certificate.
