Watch for Turtles!

With warm weather quickly on the way and turtles (not so quickly!) on the move, many of your readers may have already encountered a turtle trying to cross a busy road—an adventure that often ends in mortal wounds and lingering, painful deaths for turtles who are hit by cars.

Would you please share with your readers PETA’s tips for helping turtles they may encounter while driving? PETA’s blog post here gives the essential tips. Kind people should always stop and help turtles get across the road (in the direction they’re traveling—if their course is changed, they’ll head back into the road to correct it!). If the turtle appears to have been injured—such as in the graphic photographs on PETA’s blog—rescuers should immediately take the animal to a veterinary clinic or reputable wildlife aid center. Even a badly injured turtle may still live on for days or even weeks, so always err on the side of caution and check on the animal.
