On March 30, fire crews from the Southern Marin Fire Protection District responded to Rodeo Beach, where a 7-month-old pit bull named Mia had fallen 200 feet down a cliff and become wedged between two rocks. According to news reports, rescuers used a helicopter and rope system to reach Mia, carefully pull her from the rocks, and bring her back up the cliff. She survived the incident without serious injury. Mia was taken to a veterinarian and is reportedly expected to make a full recovery and return home shortly.
For its dramatic rescue, the Southern Marin Fire Protection District will receive a Compassionate Fire Department Award from PETA.
“The kindness and know-how shown by the Southern Marin firefighters in saving this terrified puppy’s life are inspiring,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “Marin County is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to come to the aid of both residents and their beloved animal companions.”
PETA reminds all dog guardians to be sure to keep their animal companions near them on walks with a comfortable, secure harness and to keep a close eye on animals when they’re outside, particularly puppies who are still learning to navigate their environment.
The firefighters will receive a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation, and a box of delicious vegan chocolates from PETA.
