PETA Complaint Results in Fines for Animal Drug Company
July 2013
In 2010, PETA filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) against the Colorado Serum Company (CSC) for failing to make a good-faith effort to replace its use of animals in painful experiments, as required by the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). After many attempts to address this problem with CSC directly, PETA asked the USDA to investigate CSC and hold the company accountable for its failure to take the most basic steps available to reduce its animal use. During the investigation, USDA inspectors found even more AWA violations, including the company’s failure to provide veterinary care to animals after surgical procedures, and fined CSC $7,000 in 2013. In addition, the USDA dropped CSC as a contractor the day after these violations were announced.
