In a new animated video for PETA, comedian Marc Maron asks WTF is wrong with people who are too “lazy” to get their dogs and cats spayed or neutered? In the video, which debuts on World Spay Day, he points out that “fixing” dogs and cats helps them lead happier, longer, healthier lives and saves the lives of millions more animals—and it’s certainly no more “f****d up” than celebrating your son’s circumcision!
“After [my cats] Monkey and Boomer got neutered, they got cat Vicodin,” Maron says in the video. “What—are you kidding me? You know what I got after they snipped my foreskin off? Manischewitz.” And as for the cost of what Maron calls doing “the right thing”? “Even if you’re a cheap bastard,” he says, “chances are there’s a low-cost/free spay-and-neuter clinic near you.”
Maron’s public service announcement is being released in conjunction with PETA’s celebration of the 100,000th spay/neuter surgery in its mobile clinics, which serve the poorest areas of southern Virginia and northern North Carolina. Every year, 6 to 8 million dogs and cats end up in animal shelters, and half of them have to be euthanized because there simply aren’t enough good homes for them. Spaying and neutering “fixes” the overpopulation crisis at the source, and it makes animals less likely to develop cancer of the reproductive system, get into fights, and become infected with deadly, contagious diseases such as feline leukemia and feline AIDS.
Maron joins a long list of celebrities—including Jane Lynch, Bill Maher, Fred Willard, Mickey Rourke, Cloris Leachman, and John McEnroe—who have teamed up with PETA to promote spaying and neutering.
