Ty Lawson is known for his speed on the court, but when it comes to wearing fur, the Denver Nuggets’ star point guard grinds to a screeching halt. Ranked among the top 10 NBA players at his position for the first quarter of the 2013-14 season, he has just signed on with PETA to help keep fur only on the backs of its original owners—animals. In a brand-new PETA ad campaign, available here, Lawson appears gripping a basketball and showing off his amply tattooed arm and torso above the words “I Choose Ink, Not Mink.”

“[N]o matter what the pain is from the tattoo, it’s not going to amount to what the animals are feeling,” Lawson said in an exclusive PETA video interview. “[T]hey’re beaten, they’re put in small cages, basically tortured before they’re skinned alive.”

PETA and Lawson want shoppers to know that every year, millions of animals—including foxes, minks, raccoons, rabbits, chinchillas, and even cats and dogs—are electrocuted, beaten, drowned, strangled, and skinned alive for their fur. For every coat, collar, or cuff made of fur, animals suffered immensely.

Lawson joins a growing list of top athletes—including Terrell Suggs, Tony Gonzalez, Aaron Curry, Antoine Bethea, Michael Strahan, Metta World Peace, Willis McGahee, and Maurice Jones-Drew—who have teamed up with PETA to fight cruelty to animals.
