With more and more young people leading the vegan charge, it’s only fitting that peta2, PETA’s youth division, has just launched its 2014 Favorite Vegan-Friendly College contest. After years of contests in which peta2 ranked the vegan-friendliness of colleges, this year’s contest leaves the choice of winners entirely in the hands of voters, who can cast their ballots at peta2.com . This year’s race includes 32 universities divided into two categories, large and small schools—all of which received an A on peta2’s Vegan Report Card.
“The cruelty-free and healthy food at our A-list schools is so delicious that it rivals fare normally found only in upscale restaurants,” says peta2 Director Marta Holmberg. “Eating the right foods and staying in good shape not only helps prevent heart disease and other diet-related conditions but also keeps your mind sharper so that going vegan can mean going to the top of your class.”
The schools that made the grade represent every region of the country. They include the University of New Hampshire, which keeps students smiling with its vegan chicken fajitas; the University of Florida, which has all-vegan stations in both dining halls; New Jersey’s Caldwell College, whose vegan and organic Malibu burgers have students asking for seconds; all-vegetarian Pacific Union College in Napa Valley, known for its meat-free chicken salads; the University of Hawaii at Hilo, which features five vegan entrées at meals; the University of California–San Diego and the University of North Texas for their spectacular 100 percent vegan dining halls; and more.
The contest launches on February 5, and the first round ends on February 12. Each winning school will receive framed certificates to hang in its dining halls.
