Led by a Florida veterinarian, PETA will protest a veterinary convention over a planned outing to SeaWorld, the latest PR push in the marine park’s crisis-management plan. The protest will occur outside the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) Conference on Sunday morning, as shuttles line up to take attendees to SeaWorld.
When: Sunday, January 19, 11:30 a.m.
Where: Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center, 6000 W. Osceola Pkwy. (near the intersection with International Drive), Kissimmee
As angry veterinarians point out in a letter to NAVC officials, it’s wholly inappropriate for a veterinary group to take part in a PR stunt for SeaWorld, where 35 orcas and dozens of dolphins have died far short of their natural life spans, from causes ranging from severe trauma to fungal infections.
“As veterinarians ourselves, we are shocked that a veterinary association would encourage its conference attendees to visit a cruel, anachronistic institution at which animal suffering is presented as entertainment,” the veterinarians wrote.
