St. Louis Fire Department Wins PETA Award for Saving Dog in Freezing Lake

First Responders Use Ice Suits to Wade Through Frigid Water

On January 12, crews from the St. Louis Fire Department responded to 911 calls about a dog trapped in frozen-over O’Fallon Park Lake. Diablo had apparently fallen through the ice after chasing geese on the surface of the lake. The rescuers put on ice suits and pulled him to shore. Chilly and reportedly near death, Diablo was taken to a veterinarian by his guardian and is doing fine. For their efforts in saving him, the St. Louis Fire Department will receive PETA’s Compassionate Fire Department Award.

This isn’t the first time that PETA has recognized the St. Louis Fire Department. In fact, in December 2010, it received a PETA award for rescuing another dog who had also fallen through the ice on O’Fallon Park Lake.

“The compassion and heroism shown by the St. Louis Fire Department rescue team will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “St. Louis is very fortunate to have first responders who are ready to protect and serve both residents and their beloved animal companions.”

The fire department will receive a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation, and a box of delicious vegan chocolates from PETA.

PETA reminds all dog guardians to keep their animals on a comfortable and secure harness when taking them for walks.
