Phoenix Fire Department Receives PETA Award for Saving Cats and Dogs
Crew Uses Special Oxygen Masks to Revive Animals Caught in Blaze

On January 5, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to a fire at a condominium near 12th Street and Maryland Avenue. Although the owner wasn’t at home, four dogs and two cats were trapped inside. The crew was able to remove all six animals from the home safely before reviving them with special oxygen masks made for animals. The homeowner appeared overwhelmed with gratitude when she was reunited with her animal companions.
For the firefighters’ efforts to save the dogs and cats, the Phoenix Fire Department will receive PETA’s Compassionate Fire Department Award.
“Phoenix’s firefighters are truly heroes because they don’t consider their job done until all residents—both human and nonhuman—have made it to safety,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA hopes the compassion and know-how shown by these first responders will inspire others to come to the aid of animals in need.”
PETA encourages all animal guardians to place a sign on doors or windows to alert rescue workers to the presence of dogs and cats inside. Families can order stickers from the PETA Catalog or make their own at home.
The Phoenix Fire Department will receive a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation, and a box of delicious vegan chocolates from PETA.
