Going vegan is one of the fastest-growing trends in America, and thanks in part to national role models, young people are leading the charge. That’s why peta2, PETA’s youth division, has presented a Libby Award—Libby stands for “liberation,” as in animal liberation—for Most Animal-Friendly Celebrity to Tia & Tamera star Tia Mowry. Not only is Mowry a proud vegan, she also starred in a striking peta2 ad campaign earlier this year titled “Let Veganism Grow on You,” in which she wore nothing but an apron made of fresh lettuce leaves.
“The more you learn about the benefits of being vegan, the more you become alive and the more you become aware of why this is actually a really, really great decision,” Mowry said in an exclusive peta2 interview. “Not only am I helping myself and helping many animals out there, I’m helping my environment. … I feel great!”
Going vegan is an easy way to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer, strokes, diabetes, and obesity, and it saves animals from extreme suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats. Vegan meals are also “green,” because raising animals for food is a leading cause of water pollution, land degradation, and greenhouse-gas emissions.
Mowry beat out some stiff competition that included Andy Hurley, China Anne McClain, and Jared Gilmore. Also known for her long-running series Sister, Sister and The Game, Mowry joins a long list of celebrities—including Krysten Ritter, Pink, Angela Simmons, Alicia Silverstone, and Rocsi Diaz—who have teamed up with peta2 to promote healthy and humane meat-free meals.
Twenty-six Libby Awards will be given out this year, recognizing everything from the best cruelty-free cosmetics company to peta2’s favorite animal-friendly celebrities. Winners were chosen by peta2 based on several factors, including vote count, and each winner will receive a personalized certificate and yearlong bragging rights.
