He’s known for his speed on the track, taking home the silver medal in this year’s world championships, but Nick Symmonds slowed down just enough today to unveil his new PETA ad starring his rabbit companion Mortimer. The ad, which is available here, urges holiday shoppers to buy products not tested on animals. Photos from Symmonds’ live unveiling in Los Angeles are available upon request.

“Leave animal testing in the dust,” Symmonds says in an exclusive PETA interview. “Mortimer lives a very blessed life. … [A]ll animals should be so fortunate and should not be subjected to these terrible, terrible tests.”

Every year, hundreds of thousands of animals are poisoned, blinded, and killed in unreliable cosmetics tests, which are not required by law in the U.S. and have been banned in the EU, Israel, and India. Fortunately, many companies—including LUSH, Urban Decay, Paul Mitchell Systems, and The Body Shop—use only modern non-animal methods to test their products and ingredients. PETA’s “Beauty Without Bunnies” guide to cruelty-free cosmetics is available here.

Symmonds joins a growing list of celebrities—including Christy Turlington, Pamela Anderson, Dave Navarro, Hilaria Baldwin, and Alicia Silverstone—who have teamed up with PETA to promote cruelty-free shopping.

Broadcast-quality footage of Symmonds’ video interview is available here. For more information, please visit PETA.org.
