PETA is going postal—literally. Just in time for holiday cards, the animal rights group is launching a limited-edition sheet of U.S. Postal Service–approved photo stamps honoring celebrated vegetarians—including Ricky Martin, Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Joan Jett, and Belinda Carlisle—and we thought you might be interested in covering this unique project.
Joan Jett recently made waves when a group of ranchers in South Dakota lobbied to have the outspoken vegetarian removed from the state’s float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Morrissey, of course, famously titled The Smiths’ 1985 album Meat Is Murder, and he’s still playing the title track live on tour. Longtime vegetarian advocate McCartney is the host of PETA’s exposé inside the meat industry, called “Glass Walls” for the Beatle’s celebrated statement “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian.”
Belinda Carlisle of The Go-Go’s recently recommitted to vegetarian eating, explaining, “I started practicing yoga, which is all about nonviolence, and realized eating meat isn’t compatible with that. Now I teach yoga, and I’m so full of pride not to support factory farms and to be socially responsible.” And Ricky Martin went vegetarian even more recently—and his health drastically improved as a result. “I’ve had high cholesterol since [I was] 19 years old,” he told Ellen DeGeneres last month. “I am not eating meat at all. And I feel amazing. My cholesterol is stable, my head is clear, I sleep better, my energy is where it needs to be.”
