PETA is going postal—literally. Just in time for holiday cards, the animal rights group is launching a limited-edition sheet of U.S. Postal Service–approved photo stamps honoring celebrated vegetarians—including Mayim Bialik, Sarah Silverman, and Sara Gilbert—and we thought you might be interested in covering this unique project.
Speaking of the holidays, it was Thanksgiving that first prompted Silverman to go vegetarian—as a child, she unknowingly picked out a live turkey for her family’s meal and was horrified when he was slaughtered in front of her. “I had sentenced that turkey to death!” she says. “Up until then, I didn’t know where meat came from—and I’ve been a vegetarian ever since.”
Bialik—who blogs for Kveller and whose cookbook, Mayim’s Vegan Table, is due out in February—also decided to go vegan out of concern for animals. “Even as a child, I felt very guilty about eating animals and never knew that there was something to do about it,” she says. “And as I got older, it became clearer that there are things that I can do and choices I can make.” Gilbert went vegetarian at the age of 13, when she “started to feel weird eating animals”—and she caused her Roseanne character, Darlene, to become one of TV’s most iconic mainstream vegetarian characters.
Images of the new stamp sheet—which is available for purchase at PETA.org and also features Casey Affleck, Joaquin Phoenix, Pamela Anderson, Paul McCartney, and many others—can be previewed here.
