Horrific Peruvian Cat-Eating Festival Stopped!
September 2013
Every year on the third Saturday and Sunday in September, the “Cat’s Party,” or “Party of the Curruñao,” occurs, during which 100 cats are drowned, butchered, and consumed as part of the feast of St. Efigenia in the village of La Quebrada in San Luis de Cañete, Peru. Video from a previous year’s festival depicts terrified cats being pinned down in buckets of water to die slowly, their carcasses then cooked and body parts devoured by participants. PETA joined with local activist groups in voicing opposition to this sadistic tradition, and according to news sources, 100 cats who were slated for death were spared!
