A hot new Valentine’s Day item is making a splash at the PETA shop: the first and only PETA-approved fishnet … tights! Proceeds from these “Free the Fins” fabulous fishnets fund PETA’s vital mission to raise awareness about our finned friends’ smarts, interests, and desire to stay alive in this age of faux fish dishes.
“They’re eye-catching, not fish-catching, and the only thing ‘killer’ about these fashionable fishnets is the compliments the wearer will hook,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to be kind to all animals no matter what skin they’re in and to choose solely delicious vegan meals.”
Studies show what should be obvious: Fish feel pain. They also have long memories, sing to each other, share knowledge, and have cultural traditions. Fish like the wrasse pass the “gold standard” test of intelligence by being able to recognize themselves in a mirror, and others woo potential partners by creating intricate works of art in the sand on the ocean floor. Yet more fish are killed for food each year than all other animals combined. PETA’s free vegan starter kit is a great way to explore making the humane and healthy switch.
The PETA shop offers marvelous merchandise to put people in the mood (to save animals, of course), including the Heartfelt Treasures vegan truffle assortment, edible vegan strawberry massage oil, scented soy wax candles, and I Love You: Recipes From the Heart, the new cookbook from PETA’s honorary director Pamela Anderson.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. PETA also offers a free vegan starter kit on its website for anyone ready to make the switch. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
