Progress! Fewer Monkeys Imported Into the U.S. in 2024 Following Pressure From PETA

PETA’s work to combat the deadly monkey-importation trade yielded victory after lifesaving victory in 2024, and now we have even more great news to share.

The numbers are in: 15% fewer monkeys were brought into the country last year compared to 2023. This decrease has spared thousands of animals—almost all of whom are endangered long-tailed macaques—from gruesome and deadly laboratory experiments.

The good news doesn’t end there. In just six years’ time—from 2019 to 2024—monkey importations have plummeted by a whopping 53%, according to documents PETA obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It’s proof that our collective efforts are working.

This news comes on the heels of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Secretariat recommending a halt to the export of long-tailed macaques from Cambodia. In 2023, the Fish & Wildlife Service suspended the importation of these animals into the U.S. after its five-year investigation documenting widespread monkey smuggling and laundering in Cambodia. The CITES decision should bolster this suspension, which we pushed for.

We’ve written letters, filed complaints, and held colorful demonstrations, and with the help of thousands of dedicated supporters like you, we’ll keep saving animals’ lives in 2025 and beyond.

Onward and Upward

PETA is not wasting this momentum. Firmly in our sights is Safer Human Medicine Inc., a company that wants to build the largest monkey prison in the U.S. in the tiny town of Bainbridge, Georgia.

Peddling monkeys is a bad business plan well past its expiration date. We’re working with dedicated Bainbridge residents who are vehemently opposed to Safer Human Medicine’s plan in order to send the company packing.

Wield Your Power in 2025

Please TAKE ACTION and urge Bainbridge officials to block Safer Human Medicine’s plan to construct a colossal monkey prison:

Then please TAKE ACTION and urge the CDC to shut down the cruel and dangerous monkey-abduction pipeline.
