Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in response to reports of a British Columbia teenager still being hospitalized with Canada’s first human case of avian flu:
Red flags should be raised worldwide that a previously healthy teenager, with no known links to poultry farms, remains hospitalized in critical condition with avian flu, but this news comes as no surprise to anyone who has seen the filth and cruelty rife within the meat industry. Forcing thousands or even millions of animals into the crowded, waste-filled sheds of factory farms before sending them to filthy slaughterhouses is not only cruel but also a dangerous ticking time bomb. Tofu never caused a pandemic, and PETA urges everyone to please go vegan before it’s too late.
PETA notes that in response to the avian flu outbreak, Canadian farms have killed millions of birds—often by gassing them with carbon dioxide, a slow and agonizing experience. Please let me know if you have any questions or if there’s any further information that I can provide.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
