Looking for Some(one) to Be Thankful For? Adopt Abigail!

Abigail didn’t have much to be thankful for until she met PETA’s fieldworkers. Chained outside and largely ignored, the lonely German shepherd mix quickly flopped on her back for tummy rubs. She desperately soaked up all the love her new PETA friends could offer whenever they visited the “backyard” dogs in her rural North Carolina neighborhood.

With her sweet-as-pie personality and big brown eyes, Abigail quickly became a fieldworker favorite. So when her guardians admitted they didn’t have time for her, PETA staff were all too grateful for the chance to help the good-natured gal find a new home—just in time to keep her from shivering alone through Thanksgiving.

Abigail is just under 1 year old, and because she spent her formative months deprived of adequate socialization and stimulation—no parties or parades for this poor pup—she’ll need an extra patient guardian to help her navigate unfamiliar sights, sounds, and experiences. For instance, she found television terrifying at first, but after a few days in a safe and devoted foster home, she conquered that fear faster than you can say, “Free the Animals” Friday.

This loveable lady has a heart as big as her happy dance—her signature move, in which her whole body shakes with joy, her back end wiggles from side to side like your favorite canned cranberry sauce, and her front paws trot back and forth as fast as a wild turkey can fly.

Once Abigail gets to know you, she’s friendly, fun, and super snuggly—the perfect companion for a romp in a leaf pile or a post-pumpkin pie nap. She also loves to play with toys and follows her foster dad around like a dutiful shadow—this multi-talented mutt is ready to chomp a squeaky stuffy and supervise your stuffing-making skills at the same time. She’d help you chop those veggies, but she lacks opposable thumbs and is likely to abscond with the squash.

Unlike some dinner party guests—we’re looking at you, Uncle “Plants Have Feelings Too, You Know”—the adorable Abigail brings laughter and positive vibes wherever she goes. Whether she’s wiggling around or curling up for couch time, she’s sure to melt your heart faster than vegan marshmallows on a sweet potato casserole.

Weighing in at about 36 pounds, she’s petite for a shepherd mix—which she thinks means you can slip her all the dog-safe holiday foods her little heart desires. She’s already housetrained, and has done well so far with other dogs and cats in her foster home.

Is Thanksgiving too problematic to even fuss with a (turkey-free) feast? Don’t worry. Abigail’s equally down to get a head start on Festivus—as you can imagine, her list of grievances to air is quite long.
