As soon as scary season rolls in, I can’t help but pay a visit to Spirit Halloween (and every other Halloween store in my area). Every year, I stumble upon some gems that I can use to share animal rights messages. Here are the items I found this year and how I would use them to advocate for animals.
Find these and more at Spirit Halloween:
‘Monkey Skeleton’
Do your neighbors know that U.S. experimenters torment and kill monkeys abducted from their forest homes or bred on factory farms in Asia and Mauritius? They will once you display this “monkey skeleton” with a sign that informs them about these cruel practices.
‘Pet Graveyard’ Tombstone
Set up a fake graveyard with tombstones like this one with messages about pet stores and breeders, which are major players in a deadly industry that treats millions of animals like disposable merchandise every year.
Fake Rat on a Glue Trap
DIY decorations are my favorite, and this fake rat gives me a great idea. A cardboard rectangle or a flat piece of plastic with some syrup on it looks a lot like a cruel glue trap. Add a fake rat and you’ve got yourself the perfect visual to accompany a sign describing how animals suffer for days on glue traps.
Hanging ‘Pig Leg’ and ‘Human Foot’
Remind passersby that animals are just like humans by hanging these two items together with a sign: “If you wouldn’t eat one, why eat the other?”
Hanging ‘Pig Head’
Can you picture this gruesome “severed pig head” near a table at a Halloween party, next to a “Meat is Murder” poster?
Zombie Rabbit Statue
Wouldn’t this creepy (and cute?) zombie rabbit prop look great in front of a big poster that lists brands that test on rabbits and other animals? You could even include a bucket of copies of PETA’s Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide for passersby to take.
Pig Butcher Doll
This one is sure to turn heads—a pig doll dressed as a butcher! It will scare people because it flips the narrative and makes us imagine what it would feel like if we were the ones in a slaughterhouse.
