Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in response to the death of yet another newborn Pacific white-sided dolphin at SeaWorld San Antonio.
With this baby’s death, SeaWorld has added one more extinguished life to its tally of more than 500 dolphins and whales who have died, many prematurely, deprived of any opportunity to dive deep, swim free in the ocean, or see anything outside the dismal concrete prison cells they’re confined to. PETA is calling on SeaWorld to stop condemning wonderful animals to live and die in misery, end its breeding program, and release these marine mammals into seaside sanctuaries before killing any more of them.
PETA notes that dolphins and whales are used as breeding machines at SeaWorld, where they’re sexually abused, and that bottlenose dolphins are even sometimes drugged so they can’t fight back.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any other way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
