Wearing a larger-than-life Michael Kors head and a long black cloak, PETA’s Grim Reaper will chase a “cow” outside the second annual Rodeo Drive Celebrates Fashion event on Friday, while brandishing a scythe that reads, “Kors Kills Animals.” The action is the latest salvo in PETA’s campaign to compel Michael Kors and other designers to end their irresponsible use of planet- and animal-killing leather.
“Every leather bag or belt in Michael Kors’ collections represents the miserable life and terrifying death of a vulnerable animal,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA is calling on Michael Kors to give leather the boot and switch to the animal-friendly vegan materials that today’s kind consumers want.”
Where: Outside Michael Kors Collection, 242 N. Rodeo Dr., Beverly Hills
When: Friday, August 9, 2 p.m.
Why: At slaughterhouses, cows killed for leather may be skinned and dismembered while still conscious—after they’ve endured castration (for males), branding, and tail docking, all without painkillers. A PETA exposé of the world’s largest leather processor showed that workers branded calves on the face, beat cows and bulls, and shocked them with electric prods. The leather industry also contributes to land devastation, deforestation, water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
