As smoke from the massive Durkee fire chokes Boise, PETA plans to place a public appeal for personal action in the city as a reminder that eco-friendly vegan eating helps keep skies clear. This hot tip follows Earth’s hottest day on record last week and points the finger at the culprit—a climate catastrophe fueled by animal agriculture.
“No one should feel helpless after waking to a smoky hellscape, because each of us has the power to help abate the climate catastrophe by choosing vegan foods,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is urging everyone to help prevent climate-related disasters by severing ties with the planet-destroying and animal-abusing meat, egg, and dairy industries—and is standing by with free vegan starter kits for all.”
Clearing land in order to raise animals and grow crops to feed them is a leading cause of deforestation, and the massive amount of water used in animal agriculture contributes to the dry conditions that allow wildfires to spread. According to the United Nations, about a third of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are linked to food production and the largest percentage of these emissions come from the meat and dairy industries. A study published in the journal Earth System Science Data found that greenhouse gas emissions are at an all-time high, threatening to push the world into “unprecedented” levels of global heating.
In addition to slashing their carbon footprint, every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals each year daily suffering and a terrifying death.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
