Brad Pitt’s Company, ‘God’s True Cashmere,’ Removes Misleading Claims Following Cease and Desist From PETA, Still Humane-Washing

Actors can be convincing, but even Brad Pitt couldn’t pull off misleading claims about cashmere. That’s why, following a cease and desist from PETA, Pitt’s company—God’s True Cashmere—walked back its claims that its cashmere was “lovingly crafted for [goats’] well-being.” However, the company is still claiming that its cashmere is “responsibly sourced,” even though every item made of cashmere represents pain and suffering.

PETA entities have repeatedly shown that there’s no such thing as “responsibly sourced” cashmere. At operations in China and Mongolia—where nearly all the world’s cashmere is produced—PETA Asia investigators saw workers pinning down screaming goats, twisting their legs, and tearing out their hair with sharp, rake-like metal combs. The painful process left some animals with bleeding wounds. Goats deemed no longer profitable were then sent to slaughterhouses, where workers beat them over the head with hammers and slit their throats.

The company was also touting a standard it didn’t seem to understand—the Responsible Wool Standard—which doesn’t even cover cashmere. This standard applies only to products containing at least 5% certified wool, which none of God’s True Cashmere’s products apparently do. In addition, the standard doesn’t protect animals from painful, abusive practices such as castration and tail docking.

Reasonable consumers would not consider the cruelty inherent in the cashmere industry “responsible.”

‘God’s True Cashmere’ Needs to Repent

Today’s conscientious consumers value sustainability and care about animals.

PETA is calling for God’s True Cashmere to live up to its righteous name and leave gentle, curious goats alone. Animal-free fabrics are the future, and the company can easily switch to cashmere made from innovative, sustainable, and animal-friendly materials.

What You Can Do

Don’t buy into claims like “responsibly sourced”—any material stolen from an animal is a product of exploitation and cruelty. Goats, like all other animals, can feel love, pain, and fear—and they do not want to be abused and killed for clothing.

You can make a difference by choosing to dress with compassion. Check out PETA’s guide to vegan fashion for tips.
