Marion County, S.C.

Following reports that four dead puppies were found in a ditch along Ebbie Road, PETA is offering to provide a free spay surgery to the puppies’ mother, no questions asked, in the hope this will prevent future abandonments.

Many animal shelters, including in Marion County—under pressure to avoid euthanasia—turn animals away when they’re at capacity, which is almost always. Many are forced to fend for themselves on the streets, where they’re hit by cars, infected with diseases, or even killed by cruel people—much like a dog who was found dead with an electrical cord wrapped around his neck on the same road in February 2022. That’s why PETA advocates for shelters never to turn away animals, not to charge surrender fees, and to keep workable hours—as its own shelter does. Over the years, the group has sterilized over a quarter of a million dogs and cats, preventing the births of hundreds of thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens.

“Every year, millions of cats and dogs find themselves unwanted, and the solution to this crisis is prevention,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA urges guardians everywhere to have their animal companions spayed or neutered and call for help if they need it.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
