Rescued dogs are at the top of Kathy Griffin’s A-List! In a new campaign for PETA, the straight-shooting comedian opens the doors of her beautiful Malibu mansion, revealing that it’s for the dogs—her four rescued companions, that is. Her dogs (named after her mother and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit protagonists Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler) are the loves of her life, but she has a soft spot for every dog in need—and an axe to grind with breeders, all of whom shamelessly churn out litter after litter while millions of dogs are homeless.
“It’s not OK to buy a dog from a breeder, even if someone says they’re a responsible breeder, because there’s actually no such thing,” says Griffin. “Right now, there is a shelter crisis, and it’s just horrifying to me as a dog lover.”
The crisis hits home for Griffin, as the flood of homeless animals in Los Angeles has reached such epic proportions that the city council recently took the unprecedented step of ending the issuance of dog-breeding permits when shelters are at 75% capacity or over. It’s not just L.A.: In the U.S., around 70 million dogs and cats are homeless at any given time.
“Each one of us does have the power to turn this crisis around,” Griffin says in conclusion. “Volunteer at your local shelter, because these dogs, they really need you. [And] if you can, just really think about rescuing a dog.”
Griffin is part of a long list of celebrities—including Lisa Ann Walter, Ron Perlman, Tom Hardy, John Stamos, Ryan Eggold, Theo Rossi, and Cristin Milioti—who have teamed up with PETA to promote adoption.
