Monkey Strangles to Death at Wake Forest: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding new citations posted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture against Wake Forest University for one critical and one repeat violation of the federal Animal Welfare Act, including for an incident in which a monkey strangled to death:
The continued failure of Wake Forest University to meet even the bargain-basement level of care required by federal regulations proves that the school doesn’t deserve another penny of taxpayer money.
A juvenile vervet strangled to death because no one had noticed a broken chain in the monkey’s cage, on which the animal’s metal collar became caught. Experimenters also put five monkeys through anesthesia and MRI procedures without first obtaining legally required approval.
Wake Forest should redirect its resources toward modern, non-animal research methods that would actually help humans, and we urge officials there to adopt PETA’s Research Modernization Deal.
