Diners on their way into The Colonial Pancake and Waffle House or Fat Jacks Bar and Grill on Central Avenue are in for an earful on Thursday, when “Hell on Wheels”—PETA’s life-size, hyper-realistic chicken transport truck covered with images of real chickens crammed into crates on their way to slaughter—will bombard them with actual recorded sounds of the birds’ cries along with a subliminal message every 10 seconds suggesting that people go vegan.
When: Thursday, April 25, 12 noon
Where: Outside The Colonial Pancake and Waffle House, 111 Central Ave. (near Fat Jacks Bar and Grill), Hot Springs
The vexatious vehicle’s arrival follows news that a bird flu outbreak is sweeping the nation and nearly 2 million chickens used for eggs have been killed by Cal-Maine Foods Inc., which touts itself as the largest egg producer and distributor in the U.S.
“Behind every fried egg or omelet is a living, sensitive individual who will be used as an egg-laying machine before being crammed onto a truck for a terrifying, miserable journey to her death,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ truck is an appeal to anyone who eats eggs to remember that the egg and meat industries are cruel to birds and hazardous to human health and the only kind meal is a vegan one.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
