Amarillo, Texas

Ahead of Earth Day (April 22) and in the wake of devastating wildfires in the Texas Panhandle that burned more than 1 million acres and killed two humans, at least 10,000 cows, and untold numbers of wildlife, PETA supporters will light a globe on fire in front of Amarillo City Hall on Thursday to remind everyone of the cause of the destruction—a climate catastrophe fueled by animal agriculture—and call on people to fight back by going vegan.

When: Thursday, April 18, 12 noon

Where: Amarillo City Hall, 601 S. Buchanan St. (near the intersection of S. Buchanan Street and S.E. Sixth Avenue), Amarillo (See the Google Maps link here.)

Multiple studies show that the climate catastrophe has led to an increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires—and pollution, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions from meat, egg, and dairy production are among its worst drivers. Every person who goes vegan lowers their food-related carbon footprint by up to 73%—making it the single most effective way to reduce one’s negative impact on the planet—and spares the lives of nearly 200 animals a year. PETA offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to make the switch.

“The enormous quantities of greenhouse gases produced by animal agriculture are an existential threat to the planet and everyone on it,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA urges everyone to go vegan to save the Earth and their own communities—before it’s too late.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
