Waccatee Zoo Settles PETA Lawsuit, Agrees Not to Exploit Animals in Future
A lawsuit brought by PETA and concerned citizens against notorious roadside outfit Waccatee Zoo in South Carolina reached a settlement, ensuring the permanent closure of the facility, banning the operators from owning or exhibiting exotic animals in the future—with the exception of free-roaming peacocks currently on the facility property—and imposing strict limitations on their ownership of domestic animals. The settlement came exactly three months after PETA rescued nine captive animals from Waccatee who were then transferred to The Wild Animal Refuge in Colorado.
