Inside a Blood Bank Supplying Major Veterinary Chains

Many dogs—including 12-year-old Kolbie—were bred and born at the facility, and virtually all of them remain there until they die.

The investigator rescued Kolbie, who a worker said had been debarked in a “horrible” and “gruesome” surgery that the facility’s owners used to perform to keep dogs quiet.

Kolbie’s neck was scarred from the debarking surgery, which left her without most of her vocal cords.

This 13-year-old “retired” cat, named Fox, had bloody diarrhea, but the facility failed to provide him with adequate veterinary care. The investigator adopted Fox, who—after several weeks of intensive care in a loving home with plenty of cozy bedding—was euthanized because a veterinarian had determined that he had been suffering from gastrointestinal cancer.

A manager said that she planned to abandon Jane—whose blood had been drawn for sale less than three weeks prior—at “a barn out in a field” because she was too sick to be used for blood draws. PETA’s investigator adopted Jane and provided her with veterinary care.

Rugar had a growth hanging from his chest that reportedly originated as a pressure sore.

Workers drew blood for sale from Bambi, despite his chronically red, squinting eyes, and a manager refused the investigator’s offer to adopt him

Workers drew blood from elderly animals, including 12-year-old kennelmates Rugar and LeeRoy.
