In time for the 46th annual New York Renaissance Faire, PETA has placed a sky-high plea from a bird near the fairgrounds, calling on festivalgoers to skip the turkey-leg cholesterol bombs—which the 16th century English likely didn’t even eat—and “go vegan forthwith.” It’s easy at the fair, where attendees can find vegan chocolate mousse, kebabs, soft pretzels, corn on the cob, and other vegan foods to pair with the festival’s many vegan beers and ciders.

“With their colorful plumage, dignified carriage, and complex social order, turkeys are nobles in their own right, and they need their legs—we don’t,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA is calling on all the gentlepeople of the Renaissance Faire to leaveth animals in peace and choose a vegan feast.”

Each year in the U.S., the meat industry slaughters over 235 million turkeys, typically when they’re between 14 and 18 weeks old. Workers hang the young birds upside down, drag them through an electrified bath, slit their throats, and dump them into scalding-hot defeathering tanks—often while they’re still conscious. In addition to saving nearly 200 animals every year, each person who goes vegan helps fight the climate catastrophe by slashing greenhouse gas emissions and reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

The billboard is located at 1084 NY 17, Southfields.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a free vegan starter kit full of recipes to befit any king or queen.
