Stanford President Out—and NIH Has Some Explaining to Do: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Kathy Guillermo regarding the resignation of Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne over concerns about his animal experiments:

PETA is glad that Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne is out, but the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be ashamed. The agency needs to explain why it was asleep at the wheel, doling out taxpayer funds to an experimenter who apparently defrauded the government while tormenting animals. Millions of dollars were wasted, and countless animals died—along with humans waiting for treatments. NIH needs to do more than throw money at university experimenters and hope they find cures for Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s. The agency needs to audit and oversee experimenters, permanently bar cheaters from receiving public funds, and, most importantly, fund scientific research that will actually help humans, rather than throwing money away on failed animal tests.
