On Thursday, a herd of PETA supporters wearing large horse masks and holding “severed tails” dripping with “blood” will rally outside the office of Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev urging Budweiser’s parent company to end its cruel and painful amputations of Clydesdales’ tailbones. As recently revealed in PETA’s video exposé, Budweiser partially severs the horses’ tailbones by either cutting them off or using a tight band that stops the blood supply to the tail, causing part of it to die and fall off—just so the Clydesdales will look a certain way when hitched to a beer wagon.
When: Thursday, May 18, 12 noon
Where: Outside AB InBev Management, 250 Park Ave. (between E. 46th and E. 47th streets), New York
“Horses need their tails, and amputation causes immense pain, affects their balance, and removes their first line of defense against biting and disease-spreading insects,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “Budweiser is the King of Tears for disfiguring the Clydesdales, and PETA is calling on AB InBev executives to step in and let these horses keep the tails nature gave them.”
PETA—which recently purchased stock in AB InBev to push the company to end the amputations—notes that the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Association of Equine Practitioners condemn cosmetic tailbone amputation.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
