Only feet away from Clever Koi—a local eatery that serves “Pig Face Dumplings” stuffed with the cheeks of slaughtered pigs—PETA is now letting diners come face-to-face with one of the sweet, smart animals who are killed for the restaurant’s culinary gimmick.
“A pig needs her face to nuzzle her young and sniff out acorns and truffles—she doesn’t deserve to be killed just so her cheeks can become dumpling filling,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA’s piglet implores diners to consider who they are condemning to death for a fleeting taste of their flesh and opt for the many vegan options on the menu instead, like the Kung Pao Vegetables or Korean Fried Mushrooms.”
PETA points out that pigs are playful, highly intelligent, friendly animals who are soothed by music, love playing ball, sleep together in “pig piles,” and even enjoy getting massages. In the meat industry, which slaughters 129 million pigs every year, their tails are chopped off, their teeth are cut with pliers, and the males are castrated—all without painkillers. At the slaughterhouse, they’re hung upside down and bled to death.
PETA’s billboard is located at 4210 N. Central Ave., near W. Monterosa Street. Other nearby establishments with pig on the menu include George & Dragon, Yoshi’s, and Wendy’s.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—offers a free vegan starter kit. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
