Below, please find a statement from PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman in response to news that Caribou Coffee has ended its vegan milk upcharge for customers who sign on to its free loyalty program—something PETA had urged the company to do:
Caribou Coffee has got a new perk: It’s won PETA’s Compassionate Coffee Chain Award for ending the upcharge for eco- and animal-friendly vegan milks—a move that will help leave mother cows and their calves in peace and reduce the company’s greenhouse gas emissions, while sending a message that Starbucks’ days of clinging to its own shameful surcharge are numbered.
More people than ever are choosing plant-based milks, and the consumption of dairy milk has declined by 40% over the past 50 years. Caribou Coffee joins several other chains, including Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Panera Bread, Pret A Manger, and Blue Bottle Coffee, in offering dairy-free milk at no extra charge. However, Starbucks continues to charge more, despite agreeing that vegan milks are better for the planet than dairy milk. PETA, along with more than 145,000 of its members and supporters, is calling on Starbucks to end its price hike on vegan milks.
Caribou Coffee will receive a framed certificate from PETA.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
