Indie Pop Artist Alisun Hits a High Note in PETA Latino Ad for Earth Day
Mexican-American singer Alisun joined PETA Latino to encourage people to change their tune by going vegan for Earth Day! Going vegan benefits animals—including humans—the planet, and your own health. It’s a great way to awaken each day with more kindness, enhanced awareness, and a greater sense of purpose.
“I am vegan for the animals, the environment, and my own health. It started off for the animals and later on learning about the environmental impacts.”
—Alisun
Leading by example, Alisun has inspired numerous people to ditch meat, including her father, superstar musician Marco Antonio Solís. Did you know opting for vegan foods is one of the simplest and most surefire ways we can help ensure a sustainable future? Every vegan saves 1,100 gallons of water, nearly 40 pounds of grain, and 30 square feet of forested land each day.
Raising animals for food consumes more than half of all water used in the U.S. It takes 683 gallons of water to produce just 1 gallon of milk. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat.
A University of Oxford study shows that meat-eaters are responsible for almost twice as many dietary greenhouse gas emissions per day as vegetarians and about 2.5 times as many as vegans. In the U.S. alone, the digestive processes of cows, pigs, chickens, and other animals used for food and the management of manure together account for more than a third of total methane emissions. According to the United Nations, a global shift toward a vegan diet is vital in order to combat the worst effects of the climate catastrophe.
Not only is going vegan better for the environment, it also spares animals. Animals on farms are treated like unfeeling meat, egg, or milk machines. The sensitive beaks of chickens are partly seared off with a hot blade, and male cows and pigs are castrated without painkillers. Chickens, turkeys, and pigs used for food spend their brief lives in dark and crowded warehouses, many of them so cramped that they can’t even turn around or spread a single wing. They’re mired in their own waste, and the stench of ammonia fills the air.
Most animals raised for their flesh or eggs don’t see the sun or get a breath of fresh air until they’re crammed onto trucks for a nightmarish ride to the slaughterhouse, often in extreme weather and always without food or water.
