Christmas miracles do happen, as shown in a newly released PETA video starring a joyful pup named Mabel who’s enjoying her first holiday in a home with a loving family. After being confined to a cage for seven years, Mabel was among the 4,000 beagles rescued from Envigo, a laboratory supplier whose dog-breeding factory closed down following a PETA undercover investigation—and she’s now experiencing a holiday full of “firsts,” including eating Christmas cookie dog treats, getting her photo taken with Santa, and joining her human companions for walks among the holiday lights.
“For the first time in her life, Mabel is free to play and explore, receive gifts of toys under the Christmas tree, and feel the joy and love of a family during the holidays,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA encourages everyone to follow Mabel’s family’s lead and adopt, because millions of animals across the country are still waiting for a second chance like hers.”
Approximately 70 million dogs and cats are homeless in the U.S. at any given time. PETA urges anyone with the time and resources to care for an animal to adopt one from a shelter rather than contributing to the homeless-animal overpopulation crisis by buying one from a breeder or pet store.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on or abuse in any other way”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
