Anchorage Restaurant Nabs National Award for Promoting Kindness in Two Big Ways

A Compassionate Business Award from PETA is on its way to Preference in recognition of owner Dan Brown’s opposition to the deadly Iditarod, the notorious dog-sled race in which more than 150 dogs have died so far, and for cooking up a delicious menu of animal-free (vegan) foods. Conversation-starting signs in the restaurant’s window and on its entrance read, “This Alaskan Business Does Not Support the Iditarod” and “Vegan Options.”
“Preference has always stood for animal welfare with its vegan fare,” says owner Dan Brown. “That’s why it was a no-brainer to stand behind the anti-Iditarod campaign with PETA!”
“From sticking up for dogs whose lives are put at risk and even lost in the Iditarod to dishing up scrumptious vegan versions of everyone’s favorite classic dishes, like po’boys and grilled cheese sandwiches, even wings, Preference is a winner,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA encourages everyone to look out for animals and their own health, and, especially this holiday season, embrace peace on Earth for all sentient beings by going vegan.”
This is the third year Brown has joined PETA in publicly opposing the Iditarod, in which dogs suffer from bleeding ulcers, heart attacks, pneumonia, and frostbite. Up to half of those who start the race never finish due to exhaustion, injury, or illness, leaving the remaining ones to shoulder an even heavier burden. And when the dogs aren’t being raced, video footage shows that they’re chained up next to dilapidated boxes or plastic barrels in subfreezing weather and biting wind, a practice exposed in a PETA undercover investigation.
Maggie, a husky mix rescued during that investigation, is the dog featured on Preference’s Compassionate Business Award. PETA found Maggie a loving home with an adoring couple, and she went from chained to cherished.
