Motorists headed to the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair—where pigs are served as food and forced to race for spectators’ amusement—will see a sky-high appeal from a pair of pigs, who are urging attendees to have a heart and refrain from sentencing pigs to miserable lives and terrifying deaths for nothing more than a fleeting taste. The message is PETA’s and comes as a reported 49% of Americans express an interest in eating more vegan foods.
“Pigs are thinking, feeling individuals who are afraid to die and scream mightily when their throats are slit,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to enjoy vegan foods that save lives, including—given the fat and cholesterol in meat—our own!”
Nearly all of the 121 million pigs killed for food each year in the U.S. are confined to filthy enclosures so small that they can barely turn around. Workers chop off piglets’ tails, cut their teeth with pliers, and castrate the males—all without pain relief. At the slaughterhouse, workers hang pigs upside down, sometimes while they’re still conscious, and bleed them to death. By going vegan, each person can spare nearly 200 animals every year; reduce their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity; and dramatically shrink their carbon footprint.
PETA’s billboard is located at 5451 Arlington Expy., just over Mathews Bridge from the fairgrounds.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview—notes that many delicious pig-friendly options, such as Sweet Earth’s Benevolent Bacon, Tofurky’s Ham Style Roast, and Gardein’s Plant-Based Breakfast Saus’ge, are available today.
