On Saturday, Rep. Jamie Raskin will join PETA in handing out bags packed with the makings of a hearty “ThanksVegan” feast—including vegan roasts and fresh produce—to encourage Montgomery County residents to celebrate a vegan Thanksgiving this year.
When: Saturday, November 12, 10 a.m.
Where: Tommy’s Pantry, 630 Silver Spring Ave. (between Carroll Lane and Schrider Street), Silver Spring
The giveaway follows the news that 12 former workers of Plainville Farms, a self-described “humane” turkey supplier to major grocery stores, were recently charged with more than 140 counts of cruelty to animals following a PETA investigation—one of the many reasons, along with health and the environment, why more people than ever will seek out animal-free fare for the holiday this year.
“With Rep. Jamie Raskin’s help, we are happy to assist local families with their Thanksgiving meals,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “PETA encourages everyone to leave gentle turkeys off their plates this holiday and every day.”
Everyone who goes vegan slashes their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other ailments; reduces their carbon footprint; and spares nearly 200 animals a year daily suffering and terrifying deaths. Turkeys raised for food are normally slaughtered when they’re between 14 and 18 weeks old—and more than 45 million turkeys are killed each year for Thanksgiving alone.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
