‘Crying Sheep’ to Crash Navy League Dinner Over Cruel Decompression Tests

As U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro receives a Distinguished Service Award at the Navy League of the United States’ 120^th Anniversary Dinner at The Plaza hotel on Thursday, a large “sheep” and a flock of PETA supporters will be outside ratcheting up demands for the U.S. Navy to end its undistinguished decompression and oxygen toxicity experiments on sheep and other animals. The group notes that there are many animal-free, human-relevant methods that could replace these wasteful tests, which other successful navies, including those of France and the U.K., have already abandoned.

“Sheep are gentle, trusting animals, yet the U.S. Navy is squeezing the life out of them on the taxpayers’ dime in agonizing decompression tests,” says PETA Vice President Shalin Gala. “PETA urges Secretary Del Toro to stop lagging behind our allies in banning this cruelty and embracing humane, advanced, animal-free research.”

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview.
