This evening, Snow Tattoo artist Sarah Gaugler teamed up with PETA to tattoo New Yorkers’ ears with the phrase “end animal experiments” and paw prints belonging to Samson, one of 4,000 beagles rescued from a laboratory supplier that closed down following a PETA undercover investigation. Photos are available here.
“These kind people came in to experience just a tiny fraction of what beagles experience in labs, and it starts with a tattoo in the ear,” says Gaugler. “While I’ve designed tattoos for a lot of different reasons, doing them to help animals is very different and very dear to my heart.”
“Beagles are forced to get ear tattoos without sedatives or numbing cream, and the sound of the tattoo machine must be terrifying. I wasn’t even sure I could handle it, and dogs hear everything four times louder than we do,” says participant Daniella Ramadei. “For me, I am making the choice to get a tattoo that I love, but for dogs in laboratories, their tattoo is the beginning of the end. They need our help.”
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
