USDA Cites AmplifyBio for Asphyxiation of Monkey: PETA Statement

Please see the following statement from PETA Vice President Dr. Alka Chandna regarding the failure of AmplifyBio, based in West Jefferson, Ohio, to comply with minimum animal welfare regulations:

Force-feeding potentially poisonous chemicals to vulnerable monkeys, dogs, rabbits, and other animals in painful and deadly tests is business as usual for the contract killers at AmplifyBio, but incompetence adds to the animals’ suffering. According to a just-posted federal inspection report obtained by PETA, a monkey was able to escape from his cage—which was deemed inappropriate—and became stuck in a narrow passage above it. He struggled to free himself but fell unconscious and died shortly thereafter.

The citation will not undo the terror and pain that this monkey experienced, but it shows that AmplifyBio must modernize its testing program by leaving archaic and cruel animal tests behind and using only sophisticated, human-relevant testing methods.

According to the USDA report, there were 168 monkeys, 120 dogs, and 21 rabbits at AmplifyBio at the time of the inspection.
