Sheep Take Over CSU Campus in Push for Rams to ‘End Speciesism’

Newspaper dispensers across Colorado State University’s (CSU) campus are delivering some food for thought from a sheep—along with a pig and a cow—as the Rams settle into their first weeks at school: “We also feel pain, love, joy, and fear.” The new messaging salvo hitting the heart of a top cow- and sheep-abusing state—and the school that used 736 sheep in laboratory experiments last year—is the latest action in PETA’s nationwide campaign against speciesism, the belief that, despite their extraordinary talents, abilities, and intelligence, all other animal species are inferior to humans.
“All animals, from rats to rams, feel pain and fear, desire freedom, love their offspring, have unique personalities, and value their lives,” says PETA Senior Director of Youth Programs Marta Holmberg. “PETA urges everyone to fight speciesism by valuing all animals for who they are as individuals, not for the ways they can be exploited.”
Despite the proliferation of modern options that don’t exploit animals, speciesism is still used to justify killing billions of pigs, cows, chickens, and others for food; mutilating sheep for their wool; whipping tigers into performing tricks; and caging animals for laboratory experiments. Federal inspection reports reveal that CSU used over 11,000 animals in laboratory experiments last year and has been issued an alarming nine citations for violations of federal animal welfare regulations since June 2021, including for failing to secure structures properly in a bat room and the resulting deaths of 20 bats.
PETA encourages everyone to combat systemic oppression by buying cosmetics that weren’t tested on animals, choosing vegan food and fashion, staying away from animal circuses, and otherwise rejecting the exploitation of animals.
